Friday—December 21, 1810

A warm rainy day. I passed some hours this morning at my studies, and the remainder of the day I have been close at my work. Betsy sews with me in the afternoon, and is some help to me. She has behaved very well this some weeks past, is good natured, and minds anything I tell her even better than I expected she would. It is a pity she had not proper attention paid to her education. I am sure she would make a fine girl. I received a letter from James this afternoon. He says nothing about John Barker and I cannot but wonder what is the reason he has not answered my last letter. We shall no more have so good an opportunity of corresponding, for after the river freezes, we shall not be able to send James’ clothes back and forwards. I will write to James by the return of his trunk, but I shall not write to friend John until he answers my letter. I think I keep better hours now than I did formerly. It is scarcely eleven. I will hasten to bed.
